Camshaft problems

Nothing major to watch out for except to ensure the long tensioner arms are seated correctly down the bottom of the “V” if you have them out for any reason…hard to see but worth checking.

Check and re-check the valve clearances, too loose and they tick/rattle, too tight and the oil tends to get wiped off the cam/rocker faces, (not so bad these days with the good oils we have)…and you have the possibility of burning exhaust valves/seats… 0.005" for inlet and exhaust is correct…but both valves on each rocker arm need to be set at the same time with two 0.005" feelers, the rocker arm can “tilt” a little on the shaft and give “false” settings if only one side of a rocker is done at a time.

There’s some info from many years ago about the cam timing issue, read the “whole” thread as there’s a bit of mis-information within it, some of the guys are confused between the VF1000F/R and the Sabre/Magna engines, the VF1000F/R engines turn forwards and firing order is 1-4-3-2, but the Sabre/Magna shaft drive engines turn backwards and firing order is 1-2-3-4:

Our Bif might be able to chime in, I’m sure he knows about this stuff too.

Smithy.
