gearbox noise

Was wondering if anyone has a idea of what i can only describe as a gearbox grating/crunch, when gears are engaged.
I have a vf1000ff,and when i put it on the centre stand and start engine it runs fine in nuetral, if you put it into gear 1st,2nd any gear in fact theres a grating noise and the chain jerks and a slight crunchy noise, as you rev it it seems to disapear. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is to drop the oil pan off and see if there is are any bits and pieces in there that will give you some idea of where the problem is.

Something may have come loose higher up in the engine and could be sitting in on top of the gears grating and grinding as well.
