Like I said still in too minds but I’m in Scotland
If I could find a engine cheap or even crankcases heads piston rings bearings I could build a engine love this bike but it becoming to be a money pit
I hear you…I spent a silly amount on mine when I restored it…but it’s a labour of love for most of us old VF owners.
Anything that needed replacing and I could buy new, I did…anything I couldn’t buy new, I did my best to repair. I even went with a new YSS rear shock and YSS fork valve internals and springs…the suspension is so much better than the original….but they never had that sort of suspension technolgy 42 years ago. The original exhaust collector and mufflers are near impossible to get these days and mine aren’t too bad, so I removed them and have them preserved and stored in my shed….I then made my own 4-2-2 stainless “crossover” headers similar to these below, which I “kinda copied” and used Polish Dominator mufflers which were originally meant for a Blackbird….worked out well actually…sounds brilliant with the DB killers out, a bit loud but awesome nonetheless, I doubt the power is any better than stock but it’s not all about power for me these days.
The final result is pretty fair, the bike isn’t a garage queen either, it does get ridden regularly….once or twice a month….it’s just a pleasure to ride and when I stop at my local meeting places….most people are looking at my old Honda rather than the newer cookiecutter bikes. Most of the young ones don’t even know what it is, let alone the fact that it’s now 42 years old and what an iconic bike it is….they think their MT-07 is the best thing going…they unfortunately have no idea. I have 3 other modern bikes but I still prefer the old VF….takes me back to my youth when I could never afford to buy one when they were new.
