hi my fuel npump doesn’t seem to do anything-
it there supposed to be 12v going to it (not showing up)
does it run the whole time- does it make a noise when going?
can I test it with 12v?
and I read it’s not even needed? is that true?
cheers

hi admin- I’m now wondering if this post should be in the ‘in the shed’ area- if so, sorry and please move it 4 me.. ‘I’m a newbie here’ is my excuse- cheers
They run only when the engine is running and the fuel pressure in the line drops below a certain point. There is also a pump relay behind the left side cover which you can bypass to make the pump work if you need to “fill” the carbs.
They don’t actually need a pump and will happily run without it via gravity feed, but when the fuel level in the tank gets low, near reserve level, it wll be below the carb level and obviously fuel doesn’t want to go up hill.
I ran an FE for years without a fuel pump.
Smithy.
fab thanks, I’ll check nit out when I get the carbs back on..
I bypassed mine because of a bad relay.
The only neg is that it will pump fuel if the ignition is on and pressure can’t build up as in a leak or fall off.
Positively though. It will fill the carbs when you turn ignition on so you are not cranking away for ages knackering the starter system and battery.
You will hear a reassuring fast click click click…..from the pump until it’s pressurised. Way better starting after a lay up.
I still help mine along with a squirt of easy start
Hi good info- r u saying you’ve put 12v directly to the pump (from acc) and if so is it the black/ blue wire positive and green neg ?
My FE is always stored over Winter and I always empty the carbs. Come the spring I jumper the fuel pump (see photo), ignition on for a few mins until the carbs are primed and it starts first press of the button.
On the FE you should see 12V on the blue when the bike is running - this is what runs the pump (via the relay) during normal operation.
After an earlier reading of this post I added my own “carb tickler” using a front brake switch I had lying around that I converted to be “on” when pressed, rather than “off”. I siamesed the wires into the existing connector - the black and green/yellow wires in the picture. Now I can prime the carbs on every cold start.
What a great idea
Brilliant idea - this is the High IQ solution!
this all sounds good 2 me.. I’ll get into it asa I get the carbs back on.
Oddly on my FZ1 as soon as the ignition is turned on the pumps going until full pressure-- maybe 10ish clicks from the pump.. so seemingly nothing wrong with it just being on..
I thought the fuel pump goes like this:
turn key on, depress the clutch lever= actuates fuel pump?
Doesn’t work on mine, but there is a microswitch clicking at the lever when depressed
