Left cover removal and oil

Can the left crank cover be removed without draining the oil first? Never tried this but what oil would be in that cover?

There will be oil in there but you wont have to drain engine. There is usually a small amount as there are a couple of passageways to the main part,of the engine as shown below

You will need to put something to catch the oil that will gather in case below the level of these two passages.
