I don’t think it’s too strange, or strange at all. My 86’ has a manufacture date of 10/85 too. I’m pretty sure that manufacturers begin manufacturing the next year’s model in the latter months of the current year.
If you take a look to the motor number (220), it’s a VF1000RG (1986). The painting and the headlight are original for these american models. Only the mirrors are strange, because these kind of mirrors were only used for RE model. But I’ve seen several time this mirrors on american RG. Maybe it’s also original.
Mirror of US models is flat. VIN ist also for 86 model. I had an 85 US having the same mirrors and twin headlight. It has also the US fuel tank.
It looks quite good having the original screws and fasteners.
Yeah, my 86’ has the same mirrors as this one.

just looked again at your post with pic. I see your point I think, so this is an RG 1986 model, which was built in 10/85 ?
Interesting, looks like that type of plate clearly identifies the model year 1986 (RG), and the build month, in this case October 1985.
I have just bought a heap of R parts, which includes an RF frame, which I believe is probably a US model. I’ll have to have a closer look at theVIN plate to see if it has that bottom section bent under with year?
New model year bikes usually start ~Sept the previous year. So a build date of Nov or Dec of one year would be designated the next year model.
My Australian Delivered 1000R was built in May of '84, so is an '84 model.

Yeah, can see that Smithy, same on my RE, And FE and FFs.
VF Pete’s point was that he thought that it was cool to have the model year, and build date on the plate.
The other thing I noticed is that my RF has F incorporated in the frame number.
Will check my RF plate to see if it has the year on the plate bent under the frame rail?
