Hey all,
New to the scene and in need of some assistance. I acquired a 1984 VF1000 in pieces as a project that I’m restoring and I’ve run into one huge roadblock so far.
How on this earth do I remove the front fork equalizer? I’ve been wrestling with it and got it to the top, but once it hits the fork cap, it just won’t budge anymore from what I assume is the o-rings in the interior of it.
Does anyone have any input? I’m desperate, lol.
You’ll need to remove the circlips above and below the balance tube assembly. They stop the forks from moving up or down if the clamps come loose, just use something sharp to pry them off, I use and old O-ring pick or a dart. There are 2 O-rings per side inside the balance tube assembly…They seal above and below a small hole in each fork tube.
The circlips are #8 in the pic below.

If you think the o’rings are the issue then plenty of wd40 into the o’rings ,soak the try twisting the tube as pulling it out Keep the o’rings as i struggled to get some new ones.
I was able to buy the genuine O-rings from CMSNL. Used them on my “R” restoration. They have lots of hard to find stuff.
