Hello, I have recently bought a vf1000ff for £500 thinking I can go through it over the winter and keep it as a soon to be tax and mot exempt occasional use bike. However as you would expect, it is in a state of disrepair. The major issues are that the fuel tank and complete exhaust system are rusty to the point where there are pin holes in the tank and large sections of exhaust flaking off. To my mind I can either hope to find a cheap tank and full exhaust and carry on with the project. Or I can clean the carbs and replace the perished inlet rubbers and get it running so that I can break it and sell the engine in good conscience. The rest of the bike is not bad though it has done 70k miles. The frame will need blasting and repainting. The forks are fine. So I guess my question is can tanks and exhausts be picked up at a reasonable cost or should I break it?
Why not get the tank repaired? There are companies around that can refurbish them. It’s just a case of how much you want to spend, really.
Be warned, though. These bikes are a disease for which there is no cure once bitten, and by owning one you’re most of the way towards being bitten and infected!
I contacted a company near me called tank restore but they can’t deal with pin holes so I’ve ordered a kit from sureseal. It’s a 2 pack epoxy. My next big issue is the frame which has rusted around the left footrest. It has been welded but there are still holes and I’d like another frame. Oh and the exhaust collector is very rust around the connection to the right muffler. Thinking of blanking it off and having a single less restricted end can. Hoping to achieve a similar back pressure but a bit more noise. Would be good if I can get this rust bucket back on the road looking more like this.
