Cam oil feed pipes

Here’s another question if anyone knows the answer[?]. Whilst sorting out engine spares in the garage, separating FE from FF engine parts, I noticed that the cam oil feed pipes( the rigid, ‘H’ shaped feeds under the cam cover)are of a noticeably larger bore on the later models than the ones on my early FE versions, although both types fit in both types of head identically. Has anyone fitted the later type pipes to an FE without problems? Is it adviseable to do it? Was it a factory update to early models in an attempt to cure the top end oil supply problems? Any indformation welcome!!!

hi scratcher, dont know the answer to your question, but earlier this year i ordered some cam holders for my fe, from david silvers, they had larger oil holes than the originals, i think honda must have been tweaking things on the quiet.

Interesting. How much larger were the feed holes (approximately) and do you still have the part numbers? I’m still of the opinion that the Dave Dodge Oil kit is an essential mod cos it increases the flow and ‘pressure’ of the oil reaching the head. The fact that the stock system used low pressure, unfiltered oil thru restrictive pipes would still be a problem even with larger holes in the cam caps, because there isn’t enough pressure on the stock set up to take advantage of the increase in hole size. It would in effect actually reduce the pressure getting to the cams!

The cam oil-feed pipes changed during F2/F2f production and were seen on the Magna/Sabre range In USA/Ca prior to finding their place on RoW VF bikes… To make the most of the update, you need the oil feed pipes, the cam caps and the connecting bolts, which aere all “modded” at the same time… Pipes & caps have larges diameter holes, bolts have a distinct “triangular” shank to reduce CSA inside the feed pipe “banjo”… According to dave Dodge, it was all about the volume of oil to the cams, not pressure…

Thing is the F2 and F2F motors have the line bored cams and different 4 bolt cam caps, so they couldnt be used on the earlier ‘milled’ FE heads. Did they make modded parts for the earlier heads that included the updated oil pipes, FE cam caps and banjo bolts? And if they did, I wonder if it would be worth the expense. Surely would it not be of little help as the main problem with the early heads was oil ‘pressure’, or lack of it, that was the real problem, and just making the pipes and bolts with a larger area would actually decrease the pressure, unless it was added to by the addition of a higher rate oil pump(which was never done).
