Welp that’s that then the engines dead on my vf main bearings paper thin it randomly seized up on me when I tried starting it for the first time in my ownership rip this engine dunno what to do now
Dunno if I break it for spares do I get a new engine sell what’s worth selling from old one I don’t know I’m at a loss now
That’s a big-end, not the main. If the crank is salvageable and no major damage to anything else, just rebuild it….cranks, rods and bearings etc are still availble.
Looks like a 1000 “F” engine, think I can just see part of a chain in the pic.
Not a “supply” as such….but I’m looking into other bikes and small car engines in an effort to see if they can be utilised….there are some close but not exact.
I have a set of mains and big ends in the shed to suit my 1984 VF1000RE…as you’re well aware, each engine has a specific size and colour code depending on the crank pin and main journal sizes which are stamped on the upper rear crankcase, on the crankshaft counterweight webs and sides of the rods, there are several different size combinations of A & B, 1 & 2… yellow, green and brown….I was able to find a couple of NOS sets at an old Honda dealer when they were going out of business many years ago, sadly only one set was appopriate for my bike. They sometimes pop up on eBay every now and then….but getting them to specifically fit your engine is the hard part as most sellers have no idea of what they’ve got….To them, they’re just bearings.
As mentioned, I’ve been looking around at other various bikes and small car engines and trying to find any similar sized bearings which may be useful to us….there are a couple but they will require some rework/manipulation/resizing of the crank to allow them to fit…I’ve not used any of them as yet….am hoping my originals will see me through the life of my bike and probably me too..!
Strangely, the mains are smaller than the big-ends on our VF1000’s with the mains at a nominal 38mm and the rod journals a nominal size of 40mm. Most engines are the other way round with the mains bigger than the rod journals.
Must admit, I’ve never done any major damage to any of my VF engines….the worst I’ve had is a broken cam chain tensioner in one of my old VF1000FE’s…rattled like a tin full of nuts and bolts…!
The rod and the valve belong to an engine that was former in my VF1000R. I had a broken 85 US with damaged rocker arms (and cams). The 86 GER was a very cheap offer equipped with F engine and I got the old one where the parts are from.
The guy was runnig it on highway when the red oil warning lamp went on. He thought just make the last 50 km very fast . So he had to change it to a cheaper F engine. It even had a hole in the housing.
In the end it was not making one working out of two broken …. I bought a reworked one and set up the Rothmans.
