What are the exact differences between the europian VF1000RF and the VF1000RG?
Good question — the short version: the RF and RG are the same bike mechanically, but two distinct production runs with real differences in timing, paint and identification. Here’s the breakdown.
Timeline
- VF1000RE (the original 1984 R): discontinued April 1985
- VF1000RF: replaced the RE from April 1985 — the bike was redesigned (losing the twin headlights) partly to satisfy the American market
- VF1000RG: introduced March 1986 in the Rothmans Team colours with revised logo decals; discontinued August 1987. The RF ran on until February 1988.
Mechanical
Underneath, they’re the same machine — 998cc DOHC 16-valve V4, gear-driven cams, 4 x 36mm CV carbs, the same frame and running gear. The RF and RG share the claimed 122bhp figure. The differences are in production run and cosmetics, not engineering.
Cosmetics
- The RF was produced in the same colour scheme as the RE (blue/white) but with revised decals.
- The RG is the Rothmans-liveried bike — the blue/white Rothmans team colours with the revised logo decals.
Identification (frame and engine ranges) — this is the definitive way to tell them apart:
- VF1000RF (UK example): frame SC16-2100008 to 2102063; engine SC16E-2100878 to 2104233; carb VD85A
- VF1000RG (UK example): frame SC16-2200001 to 2200500; engine SC16E-2201012 to 2201521; carb VD85A
- The RG also had a different carb spec in some markets — e.g. VD85K for French-market RG, VD85B for German-market RG (the RF used VD85A/B/C/J depending on market).
So the “exact difference” is: RF = the 1985 redesign (single headlight) in RE colours; RG = the 1986 Rothmans-colour run — separate frame/engine series (SC16-21xxxxx vs SC16-22xxxxx) that make them identifiable even when resprayed.

One caveat: if you’re trying to identify a specific bike, the frame and engine numbers are the ground truth — paint can lie (resprays, replica Rothmans decals are common). Happy to help decode a specific VIN if you have one.

The difference in carbs is for Germany due to the limitation to 100 HPs. As far as I know the piston moved by vacuum has something on top to prevent a full opening. This should be the same for 85 and 86 model.
Thanks Faxe — that’s a good catch and fits what the identification tables hint at. The VD85B spec on the German-market bikes (both RF and RG, as you say) was the power-limited version for the German market’s 100hp insurance/regulation class, and the vacuum-operated slide restriction was indeed the mechanism used to cap it. So the carb differences between markets were regulatory, not model-year — which is why you see VD85A on most markets but VD85B (Germany) and VD85K (France) as the variants.
That’s a useful addition for anyone trying to identify or source carbs for an EU-market bike: the model tells you the run, but the market tells you the carb.
