Fans come on at startup

Hi!

I have a 1984 VF1000F that is new to me. It has been sitting in a dealership as a display bike for 25 years.

When I turn the key, the fans come on. I know this should not be the case. My guess is someone wired them to be on all the time. Before I dig in, I wanted to see if this could also be a faulty temperature sensor in the radiator or by the thermostat.

Any help would be appreciated.

First look for a by-pass switch - mine has one fitted. Check the wiring from the sensor to see if there is additional wiring and, if there is, trace it to a switch. On my F2, the sensor is at the bottom of the radiator on the right hand side. If there’s no by-pass switch, then the sensor is likely to be faulty.

I will check that first. Thank you for the help!!

As BobF mentioned, it may have an override switch or wiring fitted. The switch on the thermostat housing is for the temp guage and only has one wire. The 84F will have the fan “thermostatic” switch as BobF has mentioned…but on the right side of top radiator, just above where the lower hose is fitted.

When cold you should have no continuity across the switch terminals…..the switch should activate at approx 107c-113c. If it shows continuity when cold, just replace it…I used to fit a switch from an old Honda Civic car, which has the same thread and has fans coming on a tad earlier. Alternately you can just wire in a manual override switch like most of us do.

Smithy.

Great! thank you!!
