Back in the mists of time a part number for a Subaru thermo switch was listed “somewhere” that is a direct replacement for the FE’s but switches 10 degrees earlier.
I’m going to keep digging but any help appreciated muchly

The following part numbers all relate to a switch with the correct thread but a bigger head and two 4mm male bullet connectors.
It closes at 92 degrees and opens at 87
Valeo 37760pb2003 or 1768078000
Alternatively Rover part BNP1883
That should help to keep things cool
