Groundcable removing

Hello
Anyone who knows if its safe to remove the ground (earth) cable from the engine block on a vf1000f2.

Hi. Not really understanding the question? Why do you want to remove the earth? I personally would say no as you really want the best possible earthpath. Most electrical prblems are caused by poor earthing.

What frew168 said…why…?? Honda put it there for a reason…

I have bad charging and want to clean all connections from battery to all points before I will search other problems. Do you think it´s a stupid idea?

Sensible approach, now we know what you are doing, you can loosen the bolt on the engine block that secures the earth cable but can’t remove it because the rear cylinder head stops you.

Is there anyway you can remove it?
I want to check the earthcable if it is in bad shape.
By all means its 39 years old.

You should be able to inspect the cable by following it from one point to the other. Check and clean both ends and clean the area around were both ends attach. These cables don’t usually cause too much trouble but were they attach to can if they get dirty or loose.

One end is bolted to the cyl block behind the rear cyl head on the right side of the bike, the other end goes to the battery negative terminal, it’s pretty simple, just check the cable for poor contact etc. The bolt cannot be removed with the rear head still on the bike, as Bif mentioned…the bolt is too long.

One way to replace it is to cut the “eye” open and remove the cable then use an open ended or slotted “eye” to replace it…either way, the bolt cannot be removed.

Do you have a multimeter then can check resistants’ ?
Should have no resitance.

Hello.
I have loosen the bolt but I cant get it to fasten again. I think it snap of. In the way it broke I think. Is there anyone that knows what it is fasten to in the engine?
I mean if its holding something in the engine. Or is it just a earth connection. It was a bit lose in the bolt on the engine side. So to get a good connection I moved a bit in both ways and then it broke.

The bolt is actually one of the many which holds the upper and lower crankcase halves together, it just happens to also be used for the earth strap as well.

Then I just have to disassemble the engine I think. Or can you leave for now and change the earth to another place?

Joachim

Earth strap can go pretty much anywhere on the engine…I wouldn’t be leaving a broken crankcase bolt though, the bolts are under a lot of stress when accelerating…the bolts are there for a reason. If the bolt is broken off in the lower half of the engine, the engine will indeed have to come apart to sort it out.

Okay. Then I know I have a lot of job this winter. Does a 1000r engine fit in the F2 frame?

Yes, the “R” engine will fit in the F2 frame, it is essentially identical in dimensions as any other VF1000 engine, they share most of the same engine parts…only the gear driven cams and crank is different. There are actually quite a few VF750F’s with VF1000F & R engines in them, it’s a tight fit but they do go in. The VF750’s also share the same basic crankcase as the VF1000’s…just the bore/stroke is different.
