I bought a 1986 VF1000R

My wife and I just bought a 1986 VF1000R. I missed the sale about 5 months ago, but as luck would have it, I got a second chance. Here it is.

Bought from Kaplan Cycles, $6,950.

Were you able to get the fairing repaired and how did the paint look? Beautiful bike, mine needs repainted too many tiny scratches and nicks.

I just bought the bike through ebay last night. I’m in KY it’s in Conn. It will probably be a few weeks before I have possession of it.

I apologize for answering in such a terse manner. I was doing other things that required more attention and I didn’t want to fail to reply.

Anyway, no, I don’t have possession yet. In fact, I have only paid the required $500 down. I called the selling dealer and got voice mail. I’m sure they are busy. That’s not a big deal for me. I’m sure they will call me back and we can work out the shipping and such.

I saw this bike in the original ebay listing about five months ago, but I didn’t really have the $12,500 to spend at that time. We had just moved into the house we had just built and things and money were a little hectic then.

I told my wife that it was heartbreaking to not buy it, and that the odds were that we would never have a chance at such a beautiful machine, but that’s life sometimes; you do what you have to do, not what you want to do.

Then, last night I saw that Kaplan Motorcycles had posted the exact same video from five months earlier. It had been posted about an hour when I saw it. I recognized it immediately simply by the Youtube thumbnail.

I didn’t even watch the video. I logged onto Ebay and searched for Kaplan’s user name, and there it was. I could hardly believe it. It was buy it now for $6,975. I clicked the buy it now button, and then watched the video.

I could hardly believe that someone would return the bike for a full refund. I don’t know what remedies Kaplan offered the buyer, but I would imagine that an offer to repair or refund the cost of repair was offered, I don’t know. But the buyer was given a full refund and the bike relisted on Ebay, reduced appropriately to account for the damage.

So, now I’m just waiting to connect with Kaplan to get the vin number, complete the transaction and arrange shipping. Hopefully, this time the shipping will go smoother without and further damage.

I never thought that I would own one of these iconic classics. At best I thought I would have to buy a basket case and rebuild and restore it.

Maybe you guys know the answer to this. Is that fiberglass painted or gel coat? I guess gel coat. There used to be a body shop near here that specialized in corvettes. If they are gone, and I think they are, I search out a similar type of shop.

Anyway, that’s it. Thanks for reading. I’ll be around.

Great that you got your R on the rebound, well done!

You’re way ahead of me, amongst other VFs I have a resurrected RE rolling project( fuel tank the last hurdle?), and another RE project which needs lots of work.

Currently finishing swapping an RG motor into an FF.

Keep us updated on delivery, repairs, and riding!

You seem to be dedicated to the VF. That’s awesome.

I wired the money yesterday. Hopefully, I get delivery in a week or two. I’ll post pics.
