Can the carb set be put in an ultrasonic cleaner without separating carbs but removing slides, jets, bowls etc.?
Sure, as long as the ultrasonic cleaner is big enough.
Depends on the fluid used…if it’s not kind to O-rings and diaphragms…I wouldn’t. Some of the small passages are also “blind” and the crap can’t get out unless all the jets and adjustment screws are removed. The only way to do it “properly” is a full dismantle unfortunately. I went through this recently with my RE restoration…40+ years of crap in the carbs is not easy to remove…I put a full Factory-Pro Stage 2 rebuild kit and new diaphragms through them…bike runs like a dream now.

Thanks for the reply Smithy. Can you send me the link for the rebuild kit? Is there info on bench syncing carbs in the manual?
I have been unable to get 1 cylinder to idle despite cleaning 3 times ( without ultrasonic).
Runs on mains, idle jet clean and squirting fluid into idle jet holder sees fluid come out of mixture screw hole and hole in carb throat. Has spark and fuel so should idle but no.
If the bike is new to me i tend to split the carbs completely before ultrasonic cleaning, if its one of my bikes thats already previously had a carb clean and re build i quite often remove all the jets and slides but leave the carbs still fixed to the plenium chamber, the choke plungers are the only thing you cant remove doing it this way… then blow out all the blind holes with the air gun and a bit of carbusol carb cleaner…
There’s lots of rebuild kits on fleabay:

Question relating to carbs
How to balance when plenum chamber is fitted plus will 1000f carbs do the job?
Do you fit the rubber trumpets back on.
I put o’rings between
I presume i have to remove them to rejet?
Velocity stacks should be fitted, it increases air velocity and helps with lower/mid rpm torque. VF1000F and R carbs are essentially the same. Rejetting is easily done without removing the plenum.
I bench balance mine prior to fitting back on the engine, I set the master carb throttle plate, #4 is the master, I set the throttle plate to a 0.020" gap using the idle screw and 0.020" lockwire, then adjust all the other throttle plates to suit, this will get it reasonably close, there’s a setting procedure in the manual. After fitting carbs back to the engine, I run at idle and use my balancing vacuum tool to get them more precise.
The valve clearances must be set correctly as this can also throw the manifold vacuum measurements off…and give poor tuning/running results.

Can anyone clarify what the difference is between slides and needles on an 84 and 85.They have different part numbers. Interchangeable??
A lot depends on which country too, often needles and jets will be different depending on country of residence. 84 engine is different to the 85 but not drastically…Mainly line bored cams, journals and heads…most everything else is essentially the same.
