Just thought I’d ad some pictures of my latest vf1000 project, it came to me as a 60% complete non running Re about 6 years ago, I initially got it started then due to other things left it in back of garage till now.., main things that were missing were carbs, fuel tank, silencers, clocks, wiring loom had be hacked as usual..
The aim will be a non standard R that looks presentable, it won’t be a show pony, if its ready nd reliable before may ill be heading up to Scotland on it for tha annual 4 day vf1000 thrash… im about half way through at moment, will be posting photos up of any interesting things I find or do along the way.
Yes, I liked the fact the spare fuse was still in the flap just below, it didn’t come as a suprise the starter solinoid was toast …so that sorted, A set of carbs and some more electrical gremlins sorted… engine started, carbs ballanced, 170psi compression across all cylinders. A bit smokey
So, onto trial fitting the fairings, decided to go with 85 Rf fairings and fairing bracket on this one, took a bit of sorting out as the frame to fairing bracket mounts are different between 84 and 85 frames
A few pics form the engine rebuild, i was initially only going to rebuild the top end but due to how smokey it was i decided to fully strip the engine and change the rings, remove the cylinder liners cleaning the water jackets out, this turned out to be a good move as one of the waterways was totally blocked solid with rust, no amount of flushing would have freed it up, ended up having to drill it out, I did notice on the strip down that the thermostat had been removed, so probably a overheating issue in a previous life
Hi…Yes, once you’ve split the engine cases, remove the retaining bolt at the top of the liner then knock them out with a lump hammer and piece of mild steel bar, a firm dead blow normaly gets them moving..you can also make a puller out of a piece of box section steel and threaded bar..
Good idea that don, anything to help these aging cooling systems getting clogged up..
So, on with a few more bits and pieces, powder coated frame, fairings and tank have gone off to painters and are still there, just like to say a big thankyou to Gareth ( gdj916) for the Re fuel tank, that will be heading to the paint shop to see if the failed liner can be removed,
Decided to have the radiator re cored, it wasn’t leaking but it was missing a lot of the fins, fitted spal slimline fans.. so hopefully everything should run cool.
Got the back wheel in, gone with the 5.5 inch fireblade wheel, machined the cbr600 sprocket carrier center hub down to flush with the sealed bearing, this moves the wheel across to the left, a 1.5mm washer as a spacer lines the wheel up perfectly, then machined 11mm ish off the sprocket mounting face, this moves the sprocket back over to the right which lines the chain run up perfectly with the help of bifs “ top hat” front sprocket ⁶ fastening washer.. this allows for a 180 rear tyre, with approximately a 3mm gap between tyre and 520 chain..
