Rear brake master cylinder

Hi everybody

What model,no is the rear brake master cylinder and does any other model fit

Cheers Rod

I don’t know the model number,can do the part number,but it’s the same 1/2” master as a VF500

Hi bif

Cheers for that is there anything on the engine that I should be looking for ie common faults as rolling chasis is more or less complete so moving onto the engine

Cheers Rod

I would have the sump off and check the oil pump strainer for debris, rocket covers off and check for cam wear as well as the condition of the rockers

better still the rocker covers DOH

Hi bif

In the original advert it mentions engine rattle is their anything that would jump out at you as the problem

Cheers Rod

Sounds like you need a total strip down Rod,a rattle could be anything, from a crank bearing up.
It’s not unknown for big ends to go from time to time even on well maintained bikes.

Hi rod,
I think bif has pretty much said it all, see if there’s any debris in the sump, cam and follower ware, clutch baskets can rattle a little,
P.s, the guy who owned this bike before the guy you bought it off assumed that the big end bearings had gone,

Hi pete

Is their anybody local to us who you could recommend for the engine rebuild as I would rather somebody who knows more about the vf engine to rebuild it than myself a total novice I do have basic mechanical knowledge but since this maybe the only rg to be hopefully back on the road I wouldn’t want to take the Risk

Cheers Rod

To be honest rod, I dont know any one garage who would be interested in rebuilding these, I tend to Potter along with them myself, I’ve rebuilt a few vf1000f engines, but I’m only a hobbyist.
My opinion is, if your comfortable doing a bit of spannering and you have the tools you would probably be best doing it yourself, there is probably more vf related knowledge on this forum than any garages I know.
Your issues will be spares should you need them, some bearing sizes are getting difficult to get hold of now, I’m happy to give you any help advice that I can…

Cheers pete

I will have a go it maybe a step by step process I was thinking about p and d on the langthwait in south kirkby
As he as a very good reputation for old classic bikes but like I say I will have a go I just hope I dont become a pest

Cheers Rod

I dont know p and d, if they have a good reputation for old stuff it may be worth giving them a call,
I just dont like letting things go out of my control, some garages, sprayshops, specialists arnt all they are cracked up to be, and stuff that isn’t straight forward gets pushed to the back of the que,
If you do have a bash at it yourself, ide try get hold of a vf1000rf workshop manual,
The 1985 american R manual is basically the same other than carb jet sizes, there’s normally a few of these on ebay…
