hi i have a 1984vf1000 she lay a shed for 18months or so before i bought her. ive done all the usual carb clean new plugs etc.motd the beasty road tax then went for a blast well tootle officer. got back home switched off and tried starting again but no way would she start, checked from the starter back to the earths,no probs, tested all the wiring, joints fuses nothing can anyone help me please
When you say it won’t start do you mean it doesn’t crank or it cranks poorly, like a flat battery? If it’s the latter, I had the same problem with my 84 VF1000, even with a jump pack, replaced the lead from the solenoid to the starter with a decent quality one (Honda used alloy cables on some and they degrade over time) and hey presto off she went, unfortunately that was after I had spent the coin having the starter serviced and all.
hi jingles, i had a similar problem with my vf two weeks ago and traced it to the solenoid, if you get this again try removing right side panel and shorting the two connections on top of the solenoid together being careful not to short to earth!! i used the tip of a large flat bladed screwdriver, just lift the rubber boots off the cable lugs. there will be a spark when you short them out but you only want to find out if the engine will crank, not to start engine so only need to short out for a second. i stripped down the solenoid and cleaned up the internal copper plates and rebuilt, she now starts no problem no matter how hot she is. to test the lead from the solenoid to the motor try using a jump lead from the battery +ve terminal to the starter motor instead. stripping the solenoid is a bit tricky but if you find this is the problem i can talk you through it or service it for you if you pay the postage.

sorry its taken so long to reply fellas but iv been stuck in the garage over hauling sols, rechecking all the wiring etc. but success at last, if one has the patience of a saint (well maybe not )just dogged determination, at last found the problem. a starter that was sent for overhaul, but was not done properly or not at all (by someone in cornwall). plus a nackered battary and lastly a dirty sol, and hey presto a working bike once more ,now im a very happy puppy who can cause my usual havic chaos and mayhem ya beauty. so with all my heart felt and gr8ful thankyous to all you beautiful people who sent and called me THANK YOU THANK YOU
Hi, my 84 VF1000F is also hard to start when it’s warm, but if I give it some chock it will start (but it’s still not like when it’s cold), I thought maybe it was a carb issue, but once running it runs smooth and pulls hard so now I’ll check my sol. and wiring to see if that helps.
