Vf1000 Chain guard clearance issue

I finally got around to pulling my valve cover off the rear bank on my 84 VF1000 (US market), I believe the nasty rattle/ringing I was hearing in the top end during decel is the timing chain rubbing on the guard. When I looked at the chain it was taught and up against the chain guard with the engine off. Any ideas what might cause that? I would think a stretched chain would sit loose in there. Are the guides supposed to only go in one direction?

Someone has definitely been in here before. One of the tensioner tower bolts is missing, and it looks like the cams have been removed (wear marks on the cam sprocket bolts)

Unfortunately I broke off one of the valve cover bolts when I took it off, rear right, threads are snapped off in the cam cap. Hoping I can remove it the whole thing and try to extract the bolt off the bike, don’t want to add any more metal to the inside of the motor.

You may need to check the long tensioner arms, they have a rounded section on the bottom and this part sits in a bracket with cutout down near the crankshaft…if this is not seated correctly it can cause all sorts of grief.

I’ve seen the long tensioner arms snapped off at the bottom too…worth a look at least while you’re in there.

Good luck with the broken rocker cover bolt..!

How much will I have to take apart to get to it. Do the cams need to come out? if the cams have to come out I’m going to put timing chains in it just to get it out of the way now.

Yes, cams need to come out to remove the tensioner & blade assemblies.

There’s a vid on youtube showing how to remove the tensioners, he also changes out the chain…but that’s not required in your case I suspect. etc…

And here’s your before and after audio
