Water pump seal o-ring unobtainable. Alternatives?

Hello VF enthusiasts. Can anyone help please?

I’m helping a friend with complete resto of a 1985 VF1000F.

Need a new water pump seal o-ring but it seems to be unobtainable when I check all the usual suppliers.

Honda part number is 19226MB6000 I think. Part no 9 on the CMSNL diagram below

I’m sure others have run into this problem. Wondered what solutions people have found? Some sort of gasket goo sealant (never keen for fear of bits of that breaking off and blocking passageways) or anyone worked out a good fitting size of rubber/vitron tubing that works and got a supplier to suggest for that?

Many thanks in anticipation of the usual forum members assistance.

Michael

Just buy a length of 2.0mm Viton O-ring material and make one, pretty simple, cut to length and superglue the ends together. I made one for my ‘84 RE.

Smithy.

Fab! Thanks Smithy. That sounds simple. And good to know that solution can work. I’ll try that. Appreciate your help. Michael

Smithy’s solution is good. There is another way. I’ve replaced that seal with an oring deformed to suit, and held in place with a light coating of non hardening Permatex gasket sealer.

If you go to a hydraulic shop, or have an Oring kit big enough you’ll be able to find one the correct size.

Any non genuine gasket set just have an Oring for that seal included, not a deformed gasket thesedays.

Ah ha! That’s also a good idea because I suppose it is just a sort of teardrop shape which you could deform a standard circular o-ring into. Fab. Now have two different ideas to try. Much appreciated. Thanks. Michael

Let us know how you get on,I’ve been fortunate enough to have had a few spares around, but I will be going down the Oring route if I need some in future.Ive been using Orings rather than preformed gaskets for the float bowls for years with no problems.I will sort out what size is required for the water pump and post it up here

Where are you coming from, Michael? There’s a last one available in germany.

Oh thanks very much for posting that link. Hadn’t found that one in Germany on my searches. I’m in Scotland in the UK. Cheers. Michael

Didn’t want to post anything up until I was sure of my measurements, but I can confirm that an Oring 84x2 does the job.

PM your details and I will stick one in the post
