Coolant leak vf1000f

can anyone tell me what the hole is near bottom of the pic, coolant leaks out of it. 1984 vf1000f

It’s actually a drain hole for fluids which get between the banks of cylinders. There’s also a coolant pipe with "O"rings running between the fitting in your pic and a similar fitting on the other side…the fittings themselves have a shaped "O"ring sealing them to the block…there’s also two smaller pipes which have “O” rings on them…check them also…Carbie out job to get at them easily though..!

There should be no hole (lowest grey spot). This is upper engine housing. Looks like dirt. Maybe clean it and inspect if coolant leaks out, while engine is warm?

The upper connection is like Smithy mentioned. There is also some grey dirt (alluminium oxid?).

I will look at my motor, when I return from work.

Good thread — from the photo this looks like the classic VF1000 coolant weep, not just dirt.

Key clues:

  • That hole is a weep/drain cast into the water joint housing in the vee between the banks. Its job is to let fluid escape if an internal seal fails, rather than letting pressure push into the crankcase.
  • The paint bubbling around the hole and the wet staining below it suggest active or recent weeping — though Faxe’s clean-and-watch suggestion is still worth doing before anything comes apart.
  • The leak sits right at the water joint / crossover pipe area, which points at the seals on that assembly.

Likely causes, ranked:

  1. Shaped seals between the water joints and the block (diagram item 22).
  2. O-rings on the crossover pipe running between the two sides (item 23).
  3. O-rings on the ends of the main water pipes (item 26).

Decisive checks:

  • Degrease the area, dry it thoroughly, run the bike up to temperature and watch where the weep starts — cold vs hot tells you whether it’s a pressure-only weep.
  • If it’s the crossover pipe O-rings, Smithy’s called it right: it’s a carbs-out job, but the parts are cheap and still available.

If you can say whether it weeps cold or only once hot and pressurised, that will narrow it down further — happy to dig out the full job sequence if you need it.

If you confirm that it is indeed leaking from the smaller pipes, one linking the rear 2 cylinders, and one linking the front, it is a puta of a job to fix for a few reasons.

As Smithy says, carbys have to come out. The pipes are often hard to remove as corrosion and grunge holds them in tight. Be gentle with the pipes, they crush or deform easily. Heating the pipes with a hot air gun really helps, whilst you apply gentle pressure working wooden or plastic wedges between the cylinder block and pipe. You’ll probably find you need to unblock a lot of grunge inside the pipes and block.

Once you have them out you have the dilemma of getting a thick o ring of the correct size. Because of the wide o ring recess on the pipe I ended up using correct size normal o ring to suit the hole, and a spacer made from a price of plastic hose, with lots of silastic. If you use silicone or silastic sealer, let it cure for 24 hours before starting. I tried different sealants and o rings before getting it to seal properly on the third attempt. Looking back now, I should have worked out a way of pressurizing the system before putting the carbs back on. I obviously needed more vf carb install training!:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Nice write-up, speedygp — that matches what others have found doing the same job. One thing that might save you the O-ring guessing next time: the sizes are known and documented on the forum.

From previous threads on these exact pipes:

  • The 4 O-rings where the steel pipes push into the heads are 13mm ID × 2.5mm, regular round section, available from any seal supplier.
  • The 2 O-rings on the pipe between the two alloy caps at the base of the vee are 21.9mm ID × 2.3mm.

The pipes are a push fit onto two O-rings each — penetrating fluid and gentle wiggling with a soft-face mallet gets them moving, so hopefully no need for the plastic-hose spacer and silastic next time. Fair play for making it seal on attempt three though. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I put a wire from the outside (red circle) into this hole and you see the end (red arrow).

Leakage ist suspected at the points the smithy ist pointing to (chrome tube + housing) or the tubes (black) connected to the front head. Rear hast direct routing to the outside.

You see it at your pic also inside, dripping to the outside.

Guess why I know it … (Did it on a VF500F that has 3mm compared to 2,5mm in VF1000)
